What Exactly Is Ketosis?

Getting into ketosis is what everyone on a ketogenic diet talks about, but do you know what it is? Many people think ketosis occurs when you cut back your carbohydrate intake and ramp up the amount of fat you eat. While this is an important part of getting into ketosis it isn’t quite that easy! It can take some fine tuning to find that “sweet spot,” and while some people may get into ketosis quickly, it may take some time for others. Let’s break down exactly what ketosis is and how to get the ketone body every keto-dieter aims for.

How Does the Body Get Into Ketosis?

The body gets into a state of ketosis by using fat for fuel instead of glucose. When not on a ketogenic diet, the body turns to carbohydrates as its primary fuel source. Carbohydrates are broken down into glucose which is used for energy, but any excess will be stored as glycogen for later use.

When you deprive your body of carbohydrates, your body won’t have any glucose to use for energy and it will have to look for an alternative fuel source. This is where fat comes in and why it’s so important to eat an abundant amount of healthy fats on the ketogenic diet. The body will use fat for fuel. When the fat is broken down, ketones are produced. Once your body starts using ketones as its primary fuel source, you will reach a state of ketosis. This can take some work and some dietary adjustments. However, once you reach ketosis it’s must easier to maintain because you’ll  know how much fat and carbs your body needs.

To help you get started, here are four tips on helping your body reach ketosis.

  1. Don’t Skimp on Fat: Your body needs fat for energy and for ketone production. Do not skimp on your fat intake! Your body will regulate itself based on how much fat it needs. Stick to healthy fats like avocados, nuts, seeds, coconut and olive oil, and beef.
  2. Reduce Stress: Stress can get in the way of your body’s ability to reach ketosis by throwing your hormone balance out of whack. Try to do some type of stress reduction each day.
  3. Try MCT Oil: MCT oil is an excellent source of fat and can help promote energy levels as well. You can try adding some MCT oil to your morning cup of coffee for an added healthy fat boost.
  4. Get Enough Sleep: Be sure you are getting enough sleep each night. Not getting enough sleep can also cause hormone imbalance and can make reaching ketosis more difficult.
